While an experienced rider may enjoy these challenges, specially in Northern Vietnam, they become significantly harder with another person on the back of the motorcycle. Over the years, we’ve experienced that nearly every rider enjoys Vietnam more when travelling solo.

Vietnam Is Not Your Typical Motorcycle Holiday Destination
Many riders planning a motorcycle tour and simply want the off-road adventure together with a pillion, that’s not Vietnam, simple because a Motorbike Tour here is a true adventure.
Outside Hanoi and toward the infamous Ha Giang loop, paved roads quickly shifts to the single tracks and backroads that leading you to wet and off-road sections. Of-course, those who want to stick to the road, may easily navigate with a pillion, but here we’re sharing about an off-road with a pillion.
Instead of highways, you’ll spend most days following gravel roads, dirt tracks, open grasslands, and remote mountain trails in far North Vietnam. Sometimes there isn’t even a visible road. Being a pillion on smooth asphalt is something we see and our riders are ask for it and that is fine. However, being a passenger during an off-road motorcycle tour, specially around north of Vietnam, is completely different.
Unlike the rider, the passenger has almost no control over the motorcycle and they can’t choose the line, can’t prepare for every bump and or simply react. Imagine sitting on the back of a motorcycle while crossing hundreds of kilometres of uneven terrain.
Every rock, rut, river crossing and every sudden change in direction transfers directly through the passenger seat. On rough tracks, riders often stand on the pegs to let the motorcycle move freely beneath them while passengers usually remain seated.
That means they take much more of the impact and after several hours, this becomes physically exhausting even on easier gravel roads, the constant movement requires concentration.
Passengers must stay relaxed while moving naturally with the motorcycle and if they become stiff or lean unexpectedly, the motorcycle becomes harder to control.
This is why experienced adventure riders often say that carrying a pillion off-road is more difficult than riding alone.

Some may enjoy riding shorter sections on the motorcycle before switching to the support vehicle later in the day. Others prefer travelling comfortably while taking photographs and enjoying the scenery without worrying about rough terrain.
