Do foreigners need a licence to ride a motorbike in Cambodia?

Cambodia has been in center of attention of motorbike riders since decade go and the reason is obvious, the jungle covered temples, the dirt trails and lush countrysides all are only a few of them. However, to make it legal, you’ll first need to know about the updated motorbike licensing requirements and also to make sure you’re covered by your insurance in case of any legal such as accident involved.

License requirements to ride a motorcycle in Cambodia

Cambodia officially recognizes IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. And, foreigners who plan to ride a motorbike in Cambodia must carry a valid motorcycle licence from their home country along with an International Driving Permit, commonly known as an IDP.

Motorcycle License: You are required to hold a valid motorcycle licence issued in your home country. Riding without a valid licence is strictly prohibited under the Cambodian traffic law.

International Driving Permit (IDP): In addition to your home licence, you must also apply for an IDP (1949). This translates your home-country licence into multiple languages and is commonly requested by police on checks points to avoid fines.

How to get a Cambodian Local Driver’s License

A lot of travelers tend to stay for a longer period of time in the kingdom of Cambodia and this required them to apply for a local Khmer license that allow them to ride a motorbike and or a car. The same rule applies for the expats.

Traffic laws for motorbikes under 125cc and higher big bikes in Cambodia

Just like in Vietnam and Laos, in Cambodia, motorbikes are categorized by engine displacement, and licensing requirements following that. For fleets under 125cc, surprisingly, no license is legally required, while big bikes, like those we use for motorbike tours in Cambodia requires your IDP and license specific the engine size as an endorsements.

So, when you apply for the driving permit (this should be before entering the kingdom), make sure the IDP specific the engine size.

What about traffic police checkpoints and fines?

Fines range from $15 to $1,000 depending on the severity of the violation. Drivers also face a demerit point deduction system, where losing all 12 points results in license suspension.

Each new license has 12 points, while 1 to 6 points can be deducted depending on the type of violation. Multiple deductions can also be applied at once. Police checkpoints are common, particularly in tourist areas and major cities such as Phnom Penh. Here’s what you need to know to avoid penalties:

Documents to Carry: Always carry your motorcycle license, IDP, passport, and houses rental agreement. Failure to provide these documents may result in fines ranging from $10 to $50.

Helmet Requirement: Wearing a helmet is compulsory in Cambodia, in and or outside the cities, in village and or national parks, always wear it.

Insurance to ride a Motorbike in Cambodia

I highly recommend it to have the right insurance coverage while riding in Cambodia.

Not all travel insurance include motorbike coverage, especially for larger motorcycles. So, make sure your insurer covers motorbike ride in Cambodia and check for any engine size restrictions. This includes the third-party liability insurance to protect against potential damages, accidents, or injuries.
