Our northwest Vietnam tours range from 7 to 12 days, all starting from Hanoi and pushing deep into the mountain provinces. Whether you prefer gravel trails or paved passes, I build each route around your riding level and how much time you have on the road. Browse our core northwest tours below:

Off-road motorbike tours in northwest Vietnam

Our northwest Vietnam off-road motorbike tours are built for riders who are comfortable on loose terrain and know how to handle a bike on a dirt track. These routes include single track through Hoang Su Phi, river crossings near Nghia Lo, and forest roads above Mu Cang Chai that do not show up on Google Maps.

The Northwest Off-Road 9-Day Tour runs from Hanoi through Pu Luong, up to Moc Chau, across to Mu Cang Chai and finishes in Sapa via the back roads above Khau Pha Pass. The Northwest Dirt Loop 7-Day Tour focuses on the Nghia Lo and Hoang Su Phi circuit, covering terraced field tracks and gravel climbs with consistent elevation gain. I lead both of these routes personally. Some prior off-road experience is required.

    On-road northwest Vietnam motorbike tours

For riders who want to cover the northwest on mountain tarmac without missing the mountain riding experience, my on-road northwest motorbike tours follow scenic mountain roads through some of the best switchback sections in the country.

The Northwest Classic adventure runs from Hanoi to Mai Chau, Moc Chau, Pu Luong, and up to Muong Lay, Muong Nhe & Sapa via O Quy Ho Pass, one of the longest mountain passes in northern Vietnam. The Northwest Highlights covers the same core loop at a faster length on a CB500X or perhaps a BMW GS, suited to intermediate riders who want ride on the roads and a steady daily distance. I ride at the front of every group on these tours and set the pace based on conditions on the day.

Mu Cang Chai & Khau Pha Pass on northwest Vietnam motorbike tours

Mu Cang Chai sits at around 1,000 meters and is surrounded by terraced rice fields that drop steeply on every side. The roads into the area from Nghia Lo are narrow, very twisty, and always empty, which makes it one of the better riding sections in the north.

Khau Pha Pass, at just over 1,200 meters, is a long climb with tight corners and limited guardrails. The Mu Cang Chai Loop Tour is designed around this area and offers riders a full day in the area rather than a quick pass-through. The Northwest Extended 12-14 days itinerry adds Hoang Su Phi and Lai Chau to this circuit for riders who want to cover the full northwest in one continuous route. I have ridden Khau Pha in every season and it is a completely different road in the wet versus the dry.

    Why ride northwest Vietnam?

The northwest is one of the most geographically varied riding regions in Vietnam. You move through distinct zones as you go, from lowland valleys around Mai Chau, to high plateau riding around Son La, to steep mountain terrain above Ngoc Chien, Muong La, Sin Ho, Dien Bien, the war route and the border line near Lai Chau.

It is less saturated with tour groups than Ha Giang and the roads off the main highway are quieter. As someone who rides both regions regularly, I find the northwest gives you more space on the road and more variety in a single itinerary.

Best time to ride The northwest Vietnam

I get asked this every week and the honest answer depends on what kind of riding you want. September and October are the best months for the northwest if you are chasing the rice harvest season around Mu Cang Chai and Nghia Lo.

The fields are at their best in late September and the roads are usually dry enough for both on-road and off-road touring. March to May is the other time, with clear skies, cooler temperatures at altitude, and dry trail conditions across Hoang Su Phi and the Pu Luong area.

Additionally, November through February brings cold and fog above 1,000 meters. I still run tours during this period but riders need to be prepared for low visibility on the passes and cold mornings. June to August is the wet season. Off-road routes become significantly harder and some dirt tracks close completely after heavy rain. On-road tours in this period are still in good conditions.

Off-road vs on-road – which Adventure is right for you?

Off-road tours cover single track, dirt trails, and unpaved climbs where conditions change depending on recent rainfall. These tours require prior experience on loose terrain and comfort with low-speed technical riding over extended distances.

On-road tours follow paved mountain roads with significant elevation change, long switchback sections, and minimal flat riding. These suit intermediate riders who want mountain scenery and varied road surfaces without the technical demands of dirt.

    support options

All northwest Vietnam tours can be supported by four wheel track, carrying gear, spare parts, and any rider who needs a break from the bike. This option works well for groups with mixed experience levels. I always recommend the support vehicle for first-time riders on the off-road routes.
