Day 1: Hanoi – That Khe (Approx. 220km)
We depart around 8:30am, crossing the Red River and heading north on Highway 1 through the outskirts of Hanoi. After roughly 70km we turn off onto quiet country roads, winding through hills, rice fields and village life as the city fades behind us. We ride north to the border town of That Khe. Overnight at a local guesthouse.
Day 2: Ban Gioc Waterfall – Quang Uyen (Approx. 180km)
Departing That Khe at 8am, heading west on Highway 4. After an hour we turn off onto small roads that hug the border into Cao Bang province and the limestone plateau of Quang Uyen.
Along the way we pass famous battlefields from the Viet Minh’s war against the French in the 1950s. The landscape shifts into dramatic limestone karst, sharp rock formations rising out of green rice fields, often described as Halong Bay on land.
We reach Ban Gioc Waterfall, sitting right on the border with China, before heading into the off-road section to explore hidden valleys along the border.
Day 3: Cao Bang Town (Approx. 120km)
We take the morning slow, exploring back roads and tracks through villages in this remarkable karst landscape, stopping for a lunch along the way. In the afternoon we ride to Pac Bo and Ho Chi Minh’s cave, where the Viet Minh leader directed the resistance against French occupation.
We continue on off-road tracks, some running close to the border, before arriving in the provincial capital of Cao Bang. Overnight at a hotel, dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 4: Ba Be Lake National Park (Approx. 150km)
Leaving Cao Bang we head into the mountains toward Ba Be National Park, a great ride with a few river crossings along the way. After lunch on route we turn off onto a small road leading to the Nang River, where the bikes are loaded onto boats for a journey upstream through caves and into Ba Be Lake National Park.
This clear, jungle-fringed lake is one of Vietnam’s most spectacular — cool, calm and perfect for a swim. Overnight and dinner with a local Tay hill-tribe family.
Day 5: Bao Lac – Meo Vac (Approx. 230km)
Heading north from Ba Be we ride through hill-tribe villages, forest and river valleys, climbing into rolling countryside with long views worth stopping for. We pick up Highway 23 into the small market town of Bao Lac, then leave the tarmac behind for single tracks that creep along the Chinese border. Steep climbs, river crossings by bamboo raft, and a final push up onto the Meo Vac plateau with its dramatic black rock landscape.
We explore a few back roads before rolling into the district town of Meo Vac. Overnight at a local guesthouse, dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant.
Day 6: Dong Van – Ha Giang Town (Approx. 165km)
We push out of Meo Vac into steep mountain gorges, riding off-road sections and single tracks high in the rocky mountains. H’Mong villages line the route and on weekends the local markets are worth a stop.
The Ma Pi Leng Pass closes the first half of the day, a cliff-hugging climb with views stretching into China. From Dong Van we drop back onto dirt tracks, descending through ancient villages and dramatic rocky terrain before arriving at a village resort on the edge of Ha Giang Town. Overnight at the resort.
Day 7: Pan Hou (Approx. 100km)
Today riders choose their own adventure. Option 1 is a 90km sealed road run to the resort with the afternoon free to relax, swim and recharge.
Option 2 is a full 150km off-road day on single tracks through terraced rice fields, high mountain passes and remote hill-tribe villages, coming down through Hoang Su Phi to the Dao hill-tribe village of Pan Hou.
Both options end at the same French-run resort, set in lush gardens with a relaxed lounge and well-earned cold drinks waiting.
Day 8: Xin Man (Approx. 150km)
We leave the resort and climb back into the terraced mountains, riding through some of the most photogenic landscapes of the entire trip. Hill-tribe villages, sculpted rice terraces and great off-road sections fill the morning before a picnic lunch high in the hills.
The afternoon continues on single tracks and back roads through more villages, the riding varied and the scenery consistently outstanding, all the way into the small town of Xin Man.
Day 9: Lao Cai (Approx. 130km)
This riding day takes us uphill through terraced mountains, river crossings and village back roads with lunch in the market town of Bac Ha. After lunch we ride the back roads into Lao Cai, marking the end of the route. Arrive and check in, later we enjoy the local dinner.
Day 10: Ride back to Hanoi: Ha Giang Border Ride: Off-Road Motorcycle Tour (Approx. 280 km)
The final day start with a ride across the mountain passes toward Hanoi. We stop somewhere for lunch, arrive in Hanoi in the late afternoon. End of the Ha Giang Border Ride: 10-Day Off-Road Motorcycle Tour
