Day 1: Hanoi to Thac Ba lake (Approx. 180 km)
The tour sets off at 8:00 a.m. with a short safety briefing before rolling out by 9:00 a.m. via Nhat Tan Bridge, swapping busy highways for the scenic Red River levees through Vinh Phuc Province.
The 40 km levee ride winds through lush paddies, small villages, and open farmland where buffalo roam freely. A lunch stop in Doan Hung is followed by a ferry crossing of the Lo River into rolling tea hills tended by Hmong farmers and through peaceful Dzao ethnic villages.
By 4:30 p.m. we arrive at our Dzao tribal village and check in to our homestay near Thac Ba Lake for a relaxing boat ride before a traditional dinner with local hosts. The evening comes alive with singing, dancing, traditional instruments, and rice wine.
Day 2: Ha Giang (Approx. 210 km)
The morning opens with a short village ride before crossing a wide stream toward Yen The on Route 170. A scenic stop at O Do Waterfall, a hidden gem in Yen Bai Province, is followed by a coffee break before riding along the tranquil Thac Ba Lake shoreline to a mountain pass with sweeping panoramic views of the lake below.
The route winds through palm forests and limestone formations into Luc Yen, a charming gemstone town framed by marble mountains, the Chay River, and Thac Ba Lake, and the perfect spot for lunch. The afternoon pushes through Vi Xuyen before following National Highway 2 for the final 60 km into Ha Giang City, arriving around 5:30 p.m.
From the serene waters of Thac Ba to the sparkling scenery of Luc Yen and the first glimpses of Ha Giang’s rice terraces, Day 2 delivers stunning landscapes from start to finish.
Day 3: Dong Van (Approx. 180 km)
After breakfast, we set off at 8:30 a.m. toward the heart of Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark. Just 10 km from the city, the route splits into two options based on riding style and experience.
- Option 1 – Mountain roads
National Highway 4C winds like a serpent across layered green hills into Dong Van Geopark, climbing a dramatic pass with 15% slopes and rewarding views of border forests and sweeping rice terraces. Key stops include the iconic Quan Ba Heaven Gate, the stunning Co Tien Twin Mountains, and traditional H’Mong flax weaving at Lung Tam Village.
After lunch in Yen Minh, the afternoon continues to the historic H’Mong King’s Palace and the legendary Lung Cu Flag Tower, arriving in Dong Van by 5:30 p.m.
- Option 2 – Extreme Off-road Challenge
A raw and demanding 155 km of dirt trails over 7 hours through remote Ha Giang terrain rarely seen by tourists. Challenging, deeply rewarding, and completely authentic. Arrive in Dong Van around 5:30 p.m.
Day 4: Bao Lac (Approx. 120 km)
Leaving Dong Van, the road immediately twists toward Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of northern Vietnam’s four legendary mountain passes at 1,200 meters above sea level. The panoramic views of the jade-green Nho Que River far below are among the most iconic in the country. An optional 3 to 5 km off-road climb to the peak reveals the full scale of Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark above the clouds.
By 11:30 a.m. we reach Meo Vac for lunch, then choose your afternoon route:
- Option 1 – Relaxed Road Ride
A scenic 90 km cruise along National Highway 34 into Bao Lac for a comfortable end to the day.
- Option 2 – Off-road and Cultural Adventure
Cross the Nho Que River on bamboo rafts with your bike, conquer challenging dirt trails through untouched landscapes, and stop at the legendary Khau Vai Love Market, one of the most unique cultural traditions in northern Vietnam. Just 90 km but over 5 hours of pure adventure.
Day 5: Ba Be Lake (Approx. 170 km)
Today’s route is one of the most rewarding of the entire journey. Narrow countryside roads quickly give way to 40 km of rugged off-road trails through crystal-clear streams, remote villages, and stretches of ancient primeval forest as Ba Be National Park draws closer.
A simple, authentic lunch stop around midday perfectly matches the raw spirit of the ride. The afternoon continues through Cho Ra Town and deep into the national park, arriving at Pac Ngoi Village, a scenic Tay ethnic community nestled on the lakeshore, by 4:00 p.m.
The day closes with a boat trip across the emerald waters of Ba Be Lake, framed by towering limestone cliffs and dense forest. Bring swimwear for a refreshing dip if conditions allow.
Highlights: Off-road forest trails, stream crossings, remote village riding, Tay ethnic culture, Ba Be Lake boat trip
Day 6: Drive back to Hanoi (Approx. 240 km)
Enjoy the winding roads through the twisting mountain back to Hanoi, arrive later in the afternoon, end of the Northeast motorcycle adventure from Hanoi to Ha Giang
